·       M.F. Hussain

This modernist Indian painter of international acclaim is known to craft works based on a varied stock of topics scaling from Ramayana to the British occupation of India. Some of them are quite controversial, to say the least. One particular subject that this maestro has obsessively worked on is Horses. He died at the prime age of 95. The ‘Battle of Ganga and Jamuna’ and ‘Horses’ are two well-known masterpieces of this Padma Shri awardee to name a few.

·       S.H Raza

Most notably known for his art-piece, ‘Saurashtra’ that sold for a whopping 16.42 crores, S.H Raza gave some exquisite contribution to the art world. His creations had been able to garner awards and accolades all over the world. His solo exhibitions have had the rare distinction of winning both the silver and gold medal of the reputed Bombay Art Society. He was a Padma Vibhushan awardee.

·       F N Souza

He is considered as one of the prolific personas among well-known Indian painters. He was originally from the state of Goa. His artworks have the elements from the darkest crevices of the society which are considered taboo subjects. His subjects of depiction include nudes, biblical icons etc. He died in Mumbai after a short stay in the USA. His works are displayed in museums and galleries all over the world.

·       Tyeb Mehta

Born in the western state of Gujrat, he is always revered for his works on art. When he was of a very young age, he saw a mob stoning a person to death. This lynching incident left a crease on his nascent and developing brain which he later reflected through his art by painting an art piece named as ‘Falling Figures’. Another one of his painting ‘Mahisasura’ was sold for over a million US dollar. This painting was a bit controversial as the buffalo-headed demon Mahisasura was depicted embracing the goddess Durga. He was awarded with Padma Bhushan and Kalidas Samman in recognition for his work on art.

·       Amrita Shergill

This femme-fatale of Indian art was a true revolutionary in her core. She is a torch-bearer of the modern Indian art. Her self-portraits are a mesmerizing work of art. Died at the young age of 28, this young Indian Painter will always be remembered by the artistic society of India. Her works of art were declared as National Treasures of Art. The year 2013 was recognized as the international year of Amrita Shergill by the UNESCO as a tribute to this star painter. There is also a street named after her in Lutyen’s Delhi to remember her by.
